Understanding T1 Transit Forms

If you're moving goods between the UK and EU countries beyond immediate borders such as Spain, Italy, or Germany, a T1 transit form is essential. Without it, customs duties and VAT would need to be paid at the first point of entry, rather than at the final destination.

A T1 form ensures that your goods stay under customs control during transit and only enter free circulation once they reach their intended country. This allows for smoother, more efficient cross-border movements and helps avoid paying taxes too early.

Why You May Need a T1 Form

Shipments passing through other EU member states (beyond France or other direct borders) require a T1 form to avoid unnecessary customs charges at the first port of entry. For example, if your goods are travelling through France en route to Italy, the T1 ensures you don’t pay Italian VAT or duties until the goods actually arrive there.

How We Can Help

Our team is fully authorised and holds the necessary customs transit guarantees to issue T1 forms for your exports. In addition, we can help register your business as an Authorised Consignor, allowing T1 forms to be initiated directly from your own premises—avoiding delays at the border.

What’s Involved in Raising and Closing a T1

T1 forms are created through the New Computerised Transit System (NCTS). Once submitted, the Movement Reference Number (MRN) is issued—this must accompany the goods throughout their journey.

Typically, the goods must be presented to Border Force before the T1 becomes live. However, as an authorised consignor, we can activate the T1 from your site—streamlining the process.

Upon arrival at the final destination, the local customs agent completes the import clearance, and the T1 is officially closed. If this step is missed or delayed, HMRC will follow up with the issuing broker to ensure the correct duties are paid.

Required Documents for a T1 Form

To raise a T1 form, you will need to provide:

• A Commercial Invoice

• Packing List

• Transport Document (e.g. CMR or Bill of Lading)

• Any relevant supporting certificates (such as certificates of origin)
